f:id:massneko:20140823192532j:plain

f:id:massneko:20140823193945j:plain

f:id:massneko:20140823211944j:plain

Haniwa of a young woman

This tomb figure is about 1500 years old. It was originally placed on a mounded tomb to recreate scenes from the life or the person buried there. The woman is performing some kind of dance of ritual. Her hair is tied on top of her head, and she wears a bead necklace.

Haniwa are always simple and direct in style and have inspired modern artists, as you will see upstairs. (→

Tomb figure of a chieftain

This haniwa tomb figure is thought to represent a chieftain. Her wears a tall, wide-brimmed hat, his hair is plaited in a style called mizura, and there is a sword of his belt. All the tomb figures in this case come from Ibaraki prefecture in eastern Japan. It was in this region that haniwa production became the most advanced.

Haniwa : tomb figures

These clay figures are called haniwa and they date from about the AD 500s. Large numbers were arranged on top of rulers’ mounded tombs. Figures of chieftains, soldiers, entertainers and women recreated important scenes from the lives of those buried below. The sculptures’ features were simplified and exaggerated to be visible from a distance. The beauty and simplicity of haniwa clay figures have inspired many modern artists.

Young woman

This is the head from what was originally complete figure. The young woman’s hair tied in loops, her face is partly painted red and she wears a bead necklace. This suggests that she may be a performer of ritual dance or a sharman. The haniwa is said to come from Naka-cho, Higashi Ibaraki-gun, Ibaraki prefecture.

Warrior

This is the top half of what was originally a complete figure. The warrior’s face is partly painted red, he wears his hair in plaits (one is missing), and the protective gauntlets on his forearms may be part of armour. From the AD 400s military equipment and display became increasingly important in Japanese society. This is reflected by the haniwa, which began to depict warriors, quivers with arrows, and swords in sheaths.

Coffin

The dead ruler was placed in a stone or ceramic coffin inside the mounded tomb. The coffin was then surrounded by ceramic vessels and precious objects such as mirrous, beads, and weapons. William Gowland acquired this coffin from a priest at Hoonji temple, Toyonaka city, Osaka prefecture. It had been taken from a group of tombs called Taikozuka at Sakuraidani. The coffin was dug up, intact, when land was flattened for farming in 1883. The remains of kilns were also found. They were used to fire at high temperatures both the coffin and ceramics known as Sue wares.

Kofun: mounded tombs

About AD 250 - 710

Rulers were buried in large mounded tombs, known as Kofun, from about AD 250. These were probably inspired by earlier examples in Korea and China. Some tombs have a distinctive ‘key-hole’ shape. By the late 400s, a state called Yamato, around modern Nara, had become more powerful than its rivals.

Dead rulers were placed in coffins inside stone-lined chambers within tombs.

They were furnished with bronze mirrors, beads and ceramic vessels. Later, armour, weapons and horse-trappings were also included. Haniwa, clay cylinders, were arranged along the top of the mound.

Fired clay figurine

Stylised human figures were common in the Neolithic cultures of eastern Europe. This seated figure is modelled in one piece and has incised decoration to indicate clothing and body ornaments. The holes in the ears, neck and shoulders could have held other decorative materials. It may have been a cult object, possibly a household deity.
